Joe Hardy is younger of the two Hardy boys. He and his brother Frank are both following in the footsteps of their father, as detectives. Frank's leadership and commonsense, and Joe's physical abilities mesh perfectly and together they have put countless criminals behind bars.

Out of the two brothers, Joe is the more reckless often known to act first and think later. Joe is known for getting himself in tight spots, and Frank spends a lot of time searching for his brother after he has been captured by the criminals they are currently fighting against.

Joe lives with his family in the small town of Bayport, on the east coast of the United States.

Over the past 80 years, Joe has appeared in close to 500 novels, made over 30 television appearances, and has been featured in a number of video games, and as a result there are a number of different versions of the character:
