Cave-In (retitled Cave-In!) is the 78th book in The Hardy Boys series. It was first published in 1983 by Simon & Schuster's Wanderer Books.

Plot summary[]

Richard Chase, famous actor, is abducted from his home in Los Angeles. As Frank and Joe watch the news at home with Aunt Gertrude, she recognizes the fact that Richard Chase called the Hardy house earlier in the day, looking for Fenton Hardy. Fenton Hardy arrives home right after the newscast and asks Frank and Joe to accompany him to Los Angeles as he investigates the abduction of Richard Chase. The Hardys immediately fly to Los Angeles and arrive at the home of Richard Chase. While Fenton Hardy goes to the Richard Chase home to assist with the investigation, he asks Frank and Joe to wait in their rental car. Joe and Frank decide to walk around the neighborhood only to be abducted by an unknown group of guys who demand to know why they're at Richard Chase's house. Frank and Joe are released by their captors and reunite with their father at their hotel in Los Angeles.

Fenton Hardy then asks his sons to go to Oreville, California, where Richard Chase was filming a new movie. Fenton Hardy, in the meantime, will continue his leg of the investigation in San Francisco. Frank and Joe's friend, Phil Cohen, mentions a friend of his, Tim Adams, who lives in Oreville and says he knows Richard Chase. Upon arriving in Oreville, Frank and Joe find themselves in the middle of a teen age gang rivalry involving Tim Adams. Tim Adams' claim of knowing Richard Chase proves to be false, although Tim has been trying out for parts in the movie. Frank and Joe find jobs on the movie set and invite Chet Morton to come join them to help with the investigation and to try out for a movie part. Strange accidents happen on the set, and various clues reveal a dark secret about Oreville's history that also becomes linked to the accidents on the movie set. As the Hardys and Chet uncover more details, they end up uncovering the real motive behind the accidents on the movie set and decades-long gang rivalry in Oreville, as well as save Richard Chase's life in the process.
